How the digitalization process works
The process is careful and structured, so your recordings come out preserved and neatly organized.
Phase one: Inventory and review of your tapes
We look through your tapes together, identify what is on them, and note labels and dates. What is written on a tape is often not what is on it, so the content is checked rather than assumed.
Phase two: Preparing the tapes
I check and prepare every tape before transfer: the condition of the tape and the shell, a full rewind, and a look for mould or jammed tape. If a tape is damaged, I tell you before we start, so we can decide together whether it is worth attempting.
Phase three: Converting the recordings
Your recordings are converted to MP4 or another digital format. Digitization runs in real time — a three-hour tape takes three hours, because a recording cannot be sped up without losing quality. I do all of it myself; your tapes never pass into anyone else’s hands.
Phase four: File naming and structure
Files receive clear names and a simple structure, usually by year and content — something like 1994-summer-seaside.mp4 — so that ten years from now you still know what you are opening.
